2020 made us cherish movies more than ever as they helped us fight loneliness, inspired us, and given our imaginations wings, even when we were locked in our homes. The Malayalam filmmakers in particular were at the forefront when creating entertaining and thoughtful films last year. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2021.
The makers of Drishyam 2 were surprised when they announced that the film would premiere directly on Amazon Prime Video. The OTT release doesn’t make this movie any less exciting, however. It will be interesting to see what happens when skeletons fall out of the closet. The film is the sequel to the crime drama Drishyam from 2013. Director Jeethu Joseph has retained all of the leading cast from the previous film. The release date has not yet been announced.
It is easily one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of 2021. Co-directed by Srinath Rajendran and Vini Vishwa Lal, Dulquar Salman will bring the real-life story of the infamous criminal Sukumara Kurup to the big screen. The film is released in five languages, including Hindi. It also features Sobhita Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko and Sunny Wayne.
One is known as a political thriller and is written by the successful screenplay duo Bobby and Sanjay. Directed by Santhosh Viswanath, the cast features an all-star cast led by Mammootty, who is said to play a prime minister in the film. Joju George, Murali Gopy, Nimisha Sajayan and Shanker Ramakrishnan are part of the supporting cast.
The blessed director Aadujeevitham is considered to be the most ambitious film in Prithviraj’s career to date. The film is an adaptation of Benyamin’s famous novel of the same name. Prithviraj lost a lot of weight playing an Indian immigrant who is struggling to escape the deserts of Saudi Arabia.
It’s not even possible for a movie buff not to be excited about an upcoming Lijo Jose Pellissery movie. Especially when the film is a collaboration between Pellissery and writer S Hareesh, who gave us Jallikattu, India’s official entry for the 2021 Oscars. In addition, the film stars Pellissery’s regular collaborator Chemban Vinod alongside Joju George, Vinay Forrt and Jaffer Idukki.
Malik is the product of another exciting collaboration: Mahesh Narayanan and Fahadh Faasil. The actor-director duo’s first collaboration was in the critically acclaimed 2017 film Take Off. And the duo soon worked together for CU in 2020. Malik is said to be a period drama based in part on real-life incidents involving a revolt against injustices inflicted on a minority community. The film is scheduled to be released on May 13, 2021.
Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham
Priyadarshan’s 100 crore magnum opus with Mohanlal in the title role highlights the exploits of the naval battle of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Set in the 16th century, the film has a large cast, including Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Prabhu, Manju Warrier, Keerthy Suresh , Mukesh and Siddique. The film is slated to hit theaters on March 26, 2021.
Mammootty’s The Priest will hit screens in 2021 as well. Directed by the newcomer Jofin T. Chacko based on a script by Shyam Menon and Deepu Pradeep. The film is supposed to be a mystery thriller. The priest also plays Manju Warrier, Nikhila Vimal, Sreenath Bhasi, Saniya Iyappan, and Jagadish.
Nivin Pauly’s period drama is directed by Rajeev Ravi based on a script by Gopan Chidambaram. The film takes place in the background of the Chappa system. Feudal practice was used as a method of distributing work. The film is scheduled to be released on May 13, 2021.
The superhero film is directed by Basil Joseph von Godha. Tovino Thomas plays the Indian version of the “fastest living man” in Minnal Murali. And we can’t wait to see it.
