Did you miss seeing movies on the big screen in 2020? If so, you don’t have to wait long for some of the greatest Tamil films to hit theaters in 2021. Starting in January, Kollywood filmmakers will be releasing big ticket films that are due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Theater owners across South India are hoping Vijay’s upcoming action drama will get the crowd back in theaters, even as concerns about the new strain of coronavirus continue to mount. Without the pandemic, Master would have lit up screens around the world in April 2020. Vijay’s popularity and tremendous expectations for Master are expected to revive the film distribution and exhibition business, which is difficult to get back on its feet in COVID times. The film is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has put together a dreamy star cast. In addition to Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, Andrea Jeremiah and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj can also be seen in the film. The master will hit the screens on January 13th.
For most of the 2010s, Simbu struggled with a bad reputation. He has been accused of being unprofessional, being late for work, delaying production and adding to the suffering of producers. However, the actor has clearly crawled his way out of that hole. He finished filming and dubbing his portions in Eeswaran within 40 days, so the makers could release the film for the Pongal vacation. Director Susienthiran wrote and directed the rural drama, which is due to be released on January 14th.
Karthik Subbaraj intended to release his magnum opus Jagame Thanthiram in May 2020. The COVID-induced lockdown since March threw a wrench into his plans. It’s only a matter of time before the makers announce the film’s release date. Jagame Thanthiram plays Dhanush in the lead role. It also plays veteran Hollywood actor James Cosmo in a key role.
In March, Sun Pictures announced that Rajinikanth lead actress Annaatthe would hit theaters for Pongal. However, concerns about the safety of the 70-year-old superstar did not allow manufacturers to resume production. In the second week of December 2020, Rajinikanth began filming the film in hopes of completing its servings in a single section. A few days later, the shootout was canceled on the set following a COVID outbreak. Rumor has it that the producers planned to move the location to Chennai and have the rest of the parts completed soon.
Billed as an action film, this is Ajith’s second consecutive collaboration with director H Vinoth and producer Boney Kapoor. The trio had previously delivered the courtroom drama Nerkonda Paarvai, which was the remake of Bollywood hit Pink. The creators still have to publish the first look, teaser or a larger update about Valimai.
The action drama Sulthan was written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan from Remo and stars Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna. Filming on the production of Dream Warrior Pictures was completed before COVID took place, and the producers originally planned to release the film during Deepavali. The new release date is expected.
Described as a sociopolitical thriller, Laabam was yet another film eagerly awaiting the theaters to operate with 100% seating capacity. Laabam sparked a shock wave in the industry when some reports claimed the film would premier directly on Netflix. Vijay Sethupathi later took to Twitter to clarify that the film will soon have a “major theatrical release”. Laabam is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker SP Jananathan. The trailer suggests that the film talks about problems of the farming community and the evils of crony capitalism. Laabam also plays Jagapathi Babu, Sai Dhanshika, Ramesh Thilak, Prithivi Rajan and Jai Varman.
The makers of Cobra originally planned to release the film in the summer of 2020. However, the film was never finalized due to the pandemic. Filming for the film is in progress. Directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, Cobra stars Vikram. It is said that the film will show Vikram in more than 20 different guises. Cobra also plays director KS Ravikumar, Srinidhi Shetty, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, Mrinalini, Kanika, Padmapriya and Babu Antony.
The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian is sure to be one of the most anticipated films of 2021. Shankar’s direction brings back Kamal Haasan’s sensational character Senapathy, an old vigilante with uncanny skills when it comes to killing people. Production of the film halted following an unusual accident on the set prior to the virus outbreak. A crane with high powered lights fell on the sets, killing three people and injuring many in February 2020. There is still no information on when manufacturers will restart production.
The release of director Gautham Menon’s ambitious spy thriller Dhruva Natchathiram is long overdue. The film, which is in post-production, is expected to finally see the light of day in 2021. The movie stars Vikram, Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, Simran, R. Parthiepan and Radhika Sarathkumar.
Venkat Prabhu directing Maanaadu is currently in production. Filming was delayed due to differences between Simbu and the producer of the film. The filmmakers even announced they fired Simbu and the project will hit the ground with a new star. However, Simbu managed to make peace with the filmmakers and got the job back. The film also features Kalyani Priyadarshan, SJ Suryah, Bharathiraja, ZA Chandrasekhar, Karunakaran and Premgi Amaren.
Thalaivi is based on the life and time of Jayalalithaa. Kangana Ranaut plays the late-screen icon and Prime Minister of Tamil Nadu in the film, written and directed by AL Vijay. Kangana’s uncanny resemblance to Jayalalithaa has already raised many expectations for the film.
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj and Kamal Haasan have teamed up for Vikram. You still have to start shooting the film. However, if everything goes according to plan, the action film, which is slated to be the sequel to Kamal’s 1986 espionage thriller of the same name, will hit theaters this year.
