Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of 8-bit Christmas, a new New Line comedy film in the works on HBO Max. The cast also plays Winslow Fegley (Timmy Mistake: Mistakes were made), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie) and Steve Zahn (Modern family, Greg’s diary). Michael Dowse (Coffee & Kareem) will guide.
8-bit Christmas is an adaptation of the debut novel by the author Kevin Jakubowski. Described as a “warm and humorous look at childhood mishaps”, the film is set in the Chicago suburbs in the 1980s. He follows a 10 year old boy named Jake Doyle on his epic quest for the best video game system. Harris plays the adult Jake and acts as the narrator for the film, while Fegley will play the young Jake while June Diane Raphael and Steven Zahn play his parents.
Tim White, Trevor White and Allen Mandelbaum are producing under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner together with Nick Nantell and Jonathan Sadowski. The writer Kevin Jakubowski and Whitney Brown are executive producers.
Formerly a child star best known for his lead role Doogie Howser, MD for many years, Neil Patrick Harris had a career resurrecting as an adult. An exaggerated version of yourself in the game Harold & Kumar Films and the iconic role of Barney Stinson How I met your motherHarris has certainly shown his skills as a comedic actor. He also won a Tony Award for his work on the Broadway show Hedwig and the evil customs. Younger fans will also recognize Harris for his roles in The Smurfs Movies and his recent role as Count Olaf on the Netflix series A chain of unfortunate events.
There are other large projects that Harris is currently involved in. He will play a role in The Matrix 4, which is currently slated to hit theaters in December. Harris will also play a character in The unbearable weight of massive talent, the satirical action thriller starring Nicolas Cage playing himself. He also plays Bill Aucoin in the upcoming Neil Bogart biopic, written and directed by Neil’s son Timothy Scott Bogart.
Released last year, Timmy Mistake: Mistakes were made shows the child actor Winslow Fegley in one of his very first roles as the title character. He also had roles in the television series The good doctor and Fast layne. Coincidentally, he will also play a part in Spin gold, the upcoming Neil Bogart biopic that also features Harris, but they won’t be playing the same character this time around.
In the meantime, Raphael might be best known for it Grace and Frankie, although she has also had roles in the films Year one and Unfinished business. She is perhaps best known as a co-host of How was that done?, a podcast that watches terrifying movies alongside her real-life husband Paul Scheer and boyfriend Jason Mantzoukas. Zahn has appeared in a variety of films such as: Reality bites, Dallas Buyers Club, Greg’s diary, and War for the planet of the apes. He also had recurring roles Modern family and the HBO series Treme.
