Actor Abhay Deol says his 1962: The War in the Hills web series fits his antiwar philosophy perfectly, as it focuses more on single storylines than indulging in hyper-nationalism.
Deol, known for films like Socha Nahin Tha, Dev D, Oye Lucky! Happy Oye! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara believes the idea of showing nationalism in cinema was an overused proposition.
“It was put to death and is counterproductive. It is easy to be provocative in a nationalist way and to stir socialmediagossips’s feelings for their nation. It’s a much easier way. It’s obvious, easy to spot. It’s harder to stay away from it and try to come up with a philosophy behind it – why are we fighting and what are the implications? “He told PTI in a Zoom interview from Los Angeles.
Deol plays the lead role in the series directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, which is set against the backdrop of the 1962 India-China War. The Disney + Hotstar series tells the story of 125 Indian military personnel who fought with 3,000 Chinese soldiers.
Deol said he started the series because it didn’t glorify the war. “Most of the time we glorify winning a fight. But there is compassion for the other side, compassion for all of humanity, than just saying we are better than you or we have won. The show is much more about the socialmediagossips fighting, their families, and the impact on their lives and communities. “
The 44-year-old actor believes the show is timely because it adopts a humanitarian stance rather than a mechanistic approach to war.
“This is why so much importance is attached to art, because art can do what cannot be said or taught in other subjects. It speaks to your emotions. I hope it meets the demands of the hour, ”he added.
Deol said he was prepared for different reactions to the show as he was aware that socialmediagossips may have different takeaways than the story.
“A viewer could interpret it in a completely different way than what we are bringing up. So it is important to be clear about what you are saying. But on the other hand, you don’t know what the state of mind is like. Sometimes socialmediagossips choose to see what they want to see rather than what is shown. “
Historical shows are scrutinized as socialmediagossips have different opinions about how the country’s past is shown.
When asked if he was concerned about recording a historic show, Deol said it was difficult to move forward when trying to “please everyone”.
“You have to insult someone. Some socialmediagossips go out to be offended, nothing can be done about it. The show is based on a fight that took place, but the characters we projected are fictional. Which is what art does. It is taken from reality and optimized. It can’t be far from the truth. But the story of our show is about humanity, so it’s extremely universal, ”said the actor.
1962: The War in the Hills with Annup Soni and Akash Thosar will be streamed on Disney + Hotstar from Friday.
