Apple’s next major software update for its phones and tablets, iOS 14.4, is just around the corner. The new iOS and iPadOS are already being used by beta testers and developers to iron out bugs and improve compatibility with applications. Apple brings some new features and changes with the new update, including simpler controls for the Apple HomePod Mini. Here are all the changes we can expect from the new update.
New HomePod Mini controls
If there is a newer Apple iPhone based on the U1 chip around the HomePod Mini speaker, a gentle haptic touch rhythm is automatically started. Plus, the closer your iPhone gets to the smart speaker, the faster it gets. Once in range, you will be presented with a user interface that can be used to transfer songs to the HomePod Mini.
More control over the volume warning
With Apple iOS 14.4, the audio levels offer a much finer adjustment. As soon as you have connected a bluetooth output for your films or music, iOS 14.4 will ask you to specify the device type, which can be headphones or your car radio. Based on the type of output the music is playing on, iOS 14.4 decides whether you should be warned of high volume levels that can affect your hearing over time.
New Apple Watch features
The Apple Watch gets a new function “Time to Walk” and a function “Add next Workouts to Watch”. “Time to Walk workouts will download when the Apple Watch is plugged in and near your iPhone,” read Apple’s beta instructions. While not much is known about it yet, we expect more details to be released once the update is stable.
Apple is also expected to add new warnings for unauthorized repairs on the new iPhone 12 series. These alerts alert users when components such as the camera are being repaired or replaced with spares. Users who are doing this on their phones are likely to see a “This phone cannot be verified has a genuine Apple camera” warning on their phones. Older iPhone users, including the iPhone 11 series, are unlikely to see these warnings.
Apple iPhone can now also scan minor QR codes and fixes for various issues with the fitness widget, HDR photos, and language settings on the keyboard. Although a date for the new update has not yet been officially announced, Apple should announce it soon once the update is stable enough for a public rollout.
