After ruling television, Asha Negi made a name for herself in the digital space this year. With three major releases – Baarish 2, Abhay 2 and Ludo – the actor is back in the running after a brief hiatus. As she rose to newer heights in 2020, Negi’s personal life was a tough time when she split up with longtime boyfriend Rithvik Dhanjani.
In an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com, Asha Negi talks about the past year, why she was happy during the lockdown and her fantasy of letting aliens live with people.
Excerpts from the conversation …
Baarish 2, Abhay 2 and then Ludo, you had some big hits this year. How was 2020 for you?
In all honesty, it wasn’t bad when it came to work. I had some good web series and of course released my first film. I think the year was pretty nice to me.
It could have been the year for your theatrical debut with Ludo, but it was released on Netflix due to the pandemic. Do you regret that?
When I was first told about it, I was a little discouraged. I was still a part of the film, however, and it was released on such a large scale on Netflix. I also got some great feedback for the film.
In all of your projects you played very different characters. Now that you look back, what was important to you?
Not only because it was my first film, but also because of the director and my co-stars, Ludo will always be very special to me. While Baarish and Abhay were great parts too, I was just blown away by the love I got for Ludo. While it wasn’t on the big screen, my fans made sure that the release was so special. They were so excited and tried hard to make me feel loved. I am only grateful to each of them for their selfless love.
Tell us about the experience since you returned to work amid the pandemic.
At first we weren’t used to it and cleaned up every hour. It was really weird keeping social distance on set, especially during a scene. We got used to it though and I think it will be the new normal for all of us.
What kept Asha Negi away from TV all the time?
In all honesty, there wasn’t an exciting offer that got in my way. However, I must add that I have run out of patience to work on never-ending projects. I would like to do a finite show with an exciting script. I like the kind of shows Jennifer Winget does. I would love to come back when I get the parts I want.
Was the lockdown experience easy for you as you are not a very social person?
I was so happy (laughs). Nobody called me to meet her or came home as everyone was locked in their own homes. I was busy cooking, painting, and watching shows. It was a great experience and a really happy time.
What shows did you see
There were so many that I can’t remember all of the names right now. I loved Paatal Lok. I also loved Mad Men.
While most celebs connected with fans through social media, you’ve actually taken a sabbatical from all of this. What was the idea behind it?
The thing is, sometimes we get so addicted to social media that we just scroll the phone all day. And mostly because it was the lockdown, we spent too much time on those apps and it really wasn’t healthy. That’s why I took a break to give my brain a break. I don’t know why a lot of people don’t because it’s pretty therapeutic. Anyone who feels like they are spending way too much time checking other people on Instagram and Twitter should delete the apps. It would be a refreshing break.
What was the greatest learning for you in 2020?
That happiness should be found in the smallest of things. Also, most of us tend to take our families for granted and not spend enough time with them. I’m not going to lie, I did, and this year I took time out and spent days with them for a change. And from that it was amazing.
It has been a mentally tough year for most of us, and you’ve had some setback in your relationship too. How did you deal with it?
Yes, it was tough because a lot happened. It takes a toll on you and your sanity. However, I took it as a test and learned a lot from the experience. That’s why I’m very grateful to the suspension.
If there was anything you could change about 2020 besides the pandemic, what would it be?
There are so many things. I think there have been a lot of accidents around the world. Some were pretty big, and if I could I’d like to change that.
What do you expect from 2021?
As I told you, 2020 wasn’t that bad for me. Of course I want the virus to go away now. The universe can teach us what it has without it. Other than that, I think I really want the aliens to come. That’s the only thing left. You have not arrived yet because the people on earth are not ready for it. It is high time they came in and we could all live together. It would be so fun.
