We have a brand new trailer for The courier. While many big, eye-catching films were delayed in 2020, this film managed (got a little under the wheels) despite a cast directed by Benedict Cumberbatch.Doctor strange, The imitation game) and Rachel Brosnahan (House of cards, The wonderful Mrs. Maisel). But after being pushed back a few times, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are finally preparing to release the spy / thriller in March. And this new trailer gives us a glimpse into Cumberbatch as the unlikely spy of the 60s.
The trailer opens in London around 1960. We see Benedict Cumberbatch’s character Greville Wynne, a crispy salesman who receives an unexpected phone call from some government spies. Since he is just a civilian, the KGB has less reason to believe that he is a spy. As such, he is recruited to do just that; Russian government espionage. The stakes are high as tensions rise between Russia and the rest of the world. This unsuspecting seller plays an important role in gathering crucial information. And yes, it’s based on a true story. It looks tense and is like a good vehicle for Cumberbatch to have a chance to show off its skills.
The cast also includes Merab Ninidze (nowhere in Africa, Jupiter’s moon) and Jessie Buckley (I am thinking of ending things, Chernobyl). The film is directed by Dominic Cooke (On Chesil Beach) and written by Tom O’Connor (The Hitman’s bodyguard). The thriller should be released in August 2020. It originally made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival under the title Iron bark. The studio decided to change this for release. When the August date was announced, Roadside Attractions co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff felt this was going to be a must see for movie lovers.
Things were moving a lot slower than the studio expected as the theaters got back on their feet. But the audience might well be interested in seeing something Benedict Cumberbatch Get up to some espionage gimmicks. It will only be in March instead of August. While box office potential is likely still limited, most films haven’t done particularly well in the past few months.
