The BJP was set to emerge the single largest party in Jammu, Samba, Reasi, Udhampur and Kathua districts, but suffered reverses in Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal regions.
Of the results announced for 52 seats in Jammu division so far, the BJP, which was contesting 114 seats in the division, was declared winner in 28 constituencies, mostly in Jammu, Samba and Reasi districts. The party’s advances got checkmated by the National Conference (NC), Congress, JKAP and Independent candidates in Kisht, Doda, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri districts.
Late Tuesday evening, with counting still on, the NC had won 12 seats, Congress had five, JKAP two, JKNPP one and Independents (four).
While BJP had won 13 seats and NC one in Samba district, the trends available in Jammu district showed that it was poised to win all seats, barring two, where an NC and an Independent candidate were leading. In Kathua district, BJP was leading at 12 places, while Congress and BSP were ahead in one seat each.
In Udhampur district, BJP had won four seats and JKNPP one, with the saffron party leading in at least half a dozen more. The winners in Udhampur district included BJP’s former MLA R S Pathania’s wife Juhi Manhas (Khoon constituency).
In Reasi district, BJP won at five places, with two going to NC, including former J&K minister Jagjivan Lal. The JKAP was declared elected from two places, among the winners former minister Ajaz Khan from Thruoo. Congress and Independents won one seat each.
The election results and trends available so far show that voters by and large rejected the extreme right-wing politics in Jammu division.
