It’s pretty historical as this is the first time this has happened in mind on the Sony Interactive Entertainment site. But yes, it’s official, it is no longer possible to buy CyberPunk 2077 in digital version on PS4 or in backward compatible version on PS5. Sony has just announced that the game will be withdrawn from sale until further notice. At the same time, the company undertakes to reimburse all requests from players. A review of a case on an unprecedented scale.

Why this decision?

On December 14th, CD Projekt posted a press release on CyberPunk 2077’s official Twitter account to apologize for the game’s chaotic start, and admitted to hiding the PS4 and Xbox One versions from players. So the Polish studio invited disgruntled gamers to contact PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store support for a refund.

Problem? Microsoft and Sony clearly did not realize they should be responsible for refunds. A blow on the part of CD Projekt, who protected themselves by later announcing that there was no specific agreement with Sony and Microsoft.

These (refund) policies are in place and have always been in place. They are not offered specifically for us. Anyone who has purchased a title on PlayStation Network or the Microsoft Store can request a refund. And this reimbursement can be granted if requested within a precise framework, generally tied to a specific timeframe, use of the product, etc. The procedure with Microsoft and Sony in our particular case is no different from that of other games that are sold in these stores. I want to make this clear as there seems to be some misunderstanding about this.

A decision, which obviously didn’t go well at all, was made by Sony, which accepts the proposal to reimburse dissatisfied players. However, to make sure it doesn’t happen again, Sony may have decided to literally stop selling the game on the PS4 and PS5. Never seen it before.

Earlier this week, ahead of CD Projekt’s Mea-Culpa, initial testimonials from gamers on numerous online forums indicated that Sony was already starting to reimburse some gamers by relaxing the PlayStation Store rules. Several internet users had also reported that Sony officials had implied that a possible legal action was possible. One thing is certain, the CyberPunk 2077 affair is far from over.
