After many rumors that seemed to be materializing, Discord officially announced last month that it would speak to Microsoft we’re done and that despite the 10 billion offered by the Redmond company, no agreement would be reached between the two companies. Today PlayStation announces an official partner with the VoIP and instant messaging platform. Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announces the first details on the Sony official website
PlayStation and Discord in 2022
The aim of this partnership is to connect Discord with the social and gaming world on the PlayStation Network. Sony wants to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on consoles and phones by early 2022. These new features make it easier for friends, groups, and communities to have fun and communicate while playing games together on PlayStation.
On PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with each other, make new friends and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories. With that in mind, we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment
The two companies are currently not providing any details about this partnership. Jim Ryan made it clear that Sony Interactive Entertainment is taking a minority stake in Discord’s H-Series to seal the deal. The Sony boss was seduced by the love of video games from Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, the platform’s co-founders.
Discord is currently the most popular VoIP and instant messaging platform. The monthly user base has even doubled and now reaches 140 million active users. This partnership with PlayStation is a real opportunity to attract new players, but also to make the PS5 even more efficient for online games and with friends.
