DJI has been competing with GoPro for almost two years with its Osmo Pocket, a camera based on a very specific and well-thought-out design: a miniature stabilizer that is ideal for carrying and filming. The drone and gimbal specialist will have waited many months before coming back with a second version of its product. The DJI Pocket 2 worked on its biggest flaw: the sound.
What’s new between the Osmo Pocket and the Pocket 2? DJI has studied the design of four new microphones for better sound quality and, most importantly, better recording in selfie mode. The camera, which wanted to compete with smartphones like GoPro, Hybrids and Reflex, had to incorporate a clearer sound in order to explain its presence in the market.
DJI Pocket 2: the ideal video companion?
The DJI Pocket 2 is more advanced than a smartphone and cheaper than a gimbal and camera duo and continues to position itself as a very good compromise in competition with the GoPro, which cannot offer the same rendering for handheld shots. For this, DJI has reduced the weight of its new Pocket 2 to 117 grams and with 140 minutes of autonomy. We regret that the battery is still not removable to accommodate several, but the format of the device seems to be an issue for this.
The stabilized camera can take 16 or 64 MP images. The camera’s sensor is 1 / 1.7 inch, slightly larger and therefore more interesting for night shots. In the video, too, it is good for the lens not to have to force the ISOs, which unfortunately have a faster noise than with a camera. The DJI Pocket 2 can film in 4K with 60 frames per second and a bit rate of 100 Mbit / s. The HDR mode is now available for this.
When it comes to focal lengths, DJI relies on the vlog format and wide angle shooting requirements. Thanks to a focal length of 20 mm, the camera lens is a 93-degree panoramic lens. It offers an aperture of 1: 1.8. For more distant plans, DJI announces the arrival of an 8x zoom. In reality, the limit is to zoom 4x before the image quality deteriorates. It’s still better than most of the smartphones out there.
Lastly, remember that DJI has updated their Osmo Pocket (read our review of the DJI Osmo Pocket) and now it has a much better sound for the DJI Pocket 2. The sound quality improves thanks to the presence of four microphones positioned in different ways, in particular to capture the sound of the voice. The DJI Pocket 2 also dampens the wind in its software. The entire device also enables more specific modes, such as B. “Sound Tracking”, with which the noise of a certain subject can be tracked around the camera, just like in “Audio Zoom” mode.
DJI Pocket 2: How to Use It
DJI still follows the same recipe as its Osmo Pocket: The Pocket 2 still fits in the apple of your hand and weighs next to nothing. It is possible to film this way or to use any of the various intelligent recording modes offered in the DJI gimbal. We still find the very popular ActiveTrack mode (now in version 3.0), which allows you to track a subject with the camera without moving your wrist.
Hyperlapse and timelapse modes are also part of the game, as are the various panorama modes, especially for taking pictures with ease. Also note that the DJI Pocket 2 can also broadcast content live on social networks: you can connect your smartphone to the side and use the DJI Mimo application. This application can not only publish directly on the Internet, but also gives access to the “Pro” mode, in which the image parameters for the various settings are opened.
