We have the first trailer for Boss level. The new action / thriller was originally scheduled for a theatrical release but will instead debut on Hulu in the US. The film stars Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), who works with his frequent collaborator, writer / director Joe Carnahan (The gray, The A team). This time Grillo is in a deadly time warp. It brings a new twist to the increasingly popular tool of action to make someone live the same day over and over again. Other current examples include Edge of tomorrow, Happy death anniversary and Palm Springs.
The trailer begins with Frank Grillo’s character Roy, who goes to a restaurant and has way too much to drink before being instantly murdered. We learn that this happened a few times when a mysterious villain, played by Mel Gibson, pulls the strings. Roy is forced to relive his brutal death over and over without stopping him. One fateful day things change as the love of his life is still alive, which leads him in search of her salvation. The trailer is full of action and brutal violence. Bullets. Beheadings. Even sword fights. There’s a lot going on here.
Joe Carnahan is sitting in the director’s chair. Carnahan co-wrote the script with Chris Borey and Eddie Borey. Carnahan is the producer alongside Frank Grillo, Randall Emmett and George Furla. The cast also includes Mel Gibson (Deadly weapon, Daddy’s home 2), Naomi Watts (The impossible, The ring), Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy, Annabelle), Ken Jeong (Community, the Hangover), Will Sasso (Crazy TV, How I met your mother), Selina Lo (The debt collector, Triple hazard), Wiese Williams (10 minutes passed, Cave of thieves) and Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery, Crazy rich Asians).
Boss level sees a former special forces agent named Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo} caught in a time warp that repeats the day of his murder. He discovers evidence of a secret government project that may reveal the secret behind his untimely death. In a race against the clock, Powder must hunt down Colonel Ventor (Mel Gibson), the powerful head of government programs, as he runs away from seasoned, ruthless assassins determined to keep him from the truth in order to break out of the loop, except for his ex -Mrs (Naomi Watts) and live again for tomorrow.
As with many films last year and now in 2021, they will be used for streaming. Hulu paid somewhere in the eight-figure range for the rights to this one that is still expected to hit theaters overseas. It’s kind of a best-case scenario for those films that were stuck in no man’s land waiting to be released. While it’s difficult for big blockbusters to make money this way, such a mid-budget project can handle a hybrid release strategy well. Boss level comes on March 5th on Hulu streaming service. Convince yourself of the new trailer.
