Actor Freida Pinto will star in Spy Princess, a limited series about WWII spy Noor Inayat Khan. An adaptation of Shrabani Basu’s Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan, the script for the series was written by Olivia Hetreed of Girl with a Pearl Earring. Shrabani will act as a consultant for the project.
Frieda Pinto called Noor the “most unlikely heroine of World War II” and said she was excited to explore her complex sense of duty.
“Sending women to the front is already controversial. Then it was unthinkable. Sending a Sufi mystic who does not use a weapon, daughter of a long haired Indian guru who preaches love and peace – ridiculous! But Noor does not thrive despite their differences, but because of them. Her struggle to reconcile her values with the desire to find her own way and with her complex sense of duty is something that I am so excited to explore and recreate, ”Freida told Deadline.
In an Instagram post, the actress explained her decision to sign the series. Freida said she found solace in playing a woman who showed calm strength and intelligence in the face of a crisis.
“At a time in this world when we are all looking for guidance and courage to lead us all to a semblance of sanity and order, I comfort myself very much with the calm strength, grace, intelligence and strength that Noor Inayat Khan possessed in the face of chaos during World War II.
“A real outsider who was written off as ‘not overworked with brains’. He was the first SOE female cellular operator to be sent to occupied France to help build the secret armies that would rise on D-Day, which amazed all doubters of what she could, ”Freida wrote.
Recently, Noor Inayat Khan was brought to the big screen by actor Radhika Apte in Prime Videos A Call to Spy.
