Add Garth Brooks to the entertainer ranks at the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
“This is a great day in our household,” said the country superstar during a virtual press conference on Monday, two days before Biden is due to be sworn in. “This is not a political statement.” This is a declaration of oneness. “
Brooks, who joins Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez among others, performed during President Barack Obama’s opening ceremony in 2009. He declined to play for President Donald Trump in 2017, citing a planning conflict.
Brooks was invited by new first lady Jill Biden and has known the Bidens for more than a decade when Joe Biden was Obama’s vice president.
Brooks said he’ll be performing solo for this week’s opening event, doing “broken, naked stuff” and hinted at covering material by songwriters outside of the US.
He has no plans to sing his socially conscious “We Shall Be Free,” which he performed at the Obama opening.
Brooks praised the Bidens for “being hell-bent on doing things well” and welcomed the chance to help the country heal.
“I don’t want to spend the next 10 years of my life divided. I’m so tired of being shared, ”he said.
