Actor Gérard Depardieu had been charged with rape by French authorities. The 72-year-old was charged with an incident in the country in 2018. The incident is said to have occurred at his home in Paris. Depardieu allegedly raped an actress who had not been identified at the time. The nameless actress was reportedly in her mid-twenties at the time.
The charges were brought against Gerard Depardieu back in December. However, the news is only now coming to light. The actor has been charged with both rape and sexual assault. He was not arrested at the time, but is under judicial supervision. Depardieu’s lawyer, Herve Temime, says his client “completely denies the allegations”. Temime also said the following.
“I had a long meeting with Gerard and I am convinced that his innocence will be determined.”
Depardieu did not publish any personal statement on the charges. The case in question was originally closed in 2019 due to a lack of evidence. No charges had been brought against him at the time. However, the case reopened later in October 2020, resulting in rape and sexual assault. Attorney Elodie Tuaillon-Hibon, a legal representative of the alleged victim, hopes that “her client’s privacy will be respected”. Depardieu is reportedly friends with the nameless actress’ family.
It is currently unknown when the trial will take place. Nor is it currently clear what kind of prison the former Oscar nominee could face if he is ultimately convicted. In the US, the average rape conviction is just over nine years. The convicts serve an average of just over five years. Sexual assault convictions can range from five to fifteen years in prison. The maximum rape sentence in France is fifteen years.
