Are we experiencing a new era? The Honor V40 5G is official and has some special features, some of which have nothing to do with the actual specs. That’s what makes the cell phone stand out.
The Honor V40 5G dropped its covers in China. There are lots of cameras on board, a large screen with a high refresh rate, a powerful processor – all for a relatively low price. Google services are currently unavailable, but they can still be. More on that later.
We know you from somewhere
The front with its extremely curved screen and a pill-shaped recess (for the front camera) is very reminiscent of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. This also applies in part to the light effects in the “titanium silver” color variant on the back. Alternatively, the Honor V40 is available on the market in the colors “Night Black” and “Rose Gold”.
The camera module, which basically looks like many other current Android models, is particularly noticeable. However, the extra large main lens is impressive. Overall, Honor can take a lot here.
Honor promises strong pictures in poor lighting conditions
The centerpiece is a 50 MP camera with a massive RYYB sensor (1 / 1.56). Honor promises you particularly detailed photos – day or night – and breathtaking 4K videos. The camera setup is completed with a wide-angle lens (8 MP) and a macro lens (2 MP) for close-ups. At the very bottom there is an LED flash and a laser auto focus. In the pill already mentioned on the screen, there is a dual selfie camera.
The Honor V40 5G has a 6.72-inch OLED display. The panel has a resolution of 2676 x 1236 pixels (Full HD +) and a very decent pixel density of 438 ppi. So you can expect razor-sharp images – HDR10 support is also included.
The refresh rate of 120 Hz enables animations to be displayed particularly smoothly. You can find this feature in more and more high-end devices – but it’s not yet standard.
The last of the new ones
The heart of the Honor V40 5G is the recently introduced MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ – the slightly smaller brother of the Dimensity 1200. The processor is supported by 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. Everyday tasks, multitasking or complex games: every application must work properly on the smartphone.
Faster than the Galaxy S21
A 4000 mAh battery is integrated into the smartphone. At first glance and compared to the screen size, that doesn’t seem like much. The battery life during the day also depends on the coordination between hardware and software – and this is not mentioned in any data sheet.
However, if the battery is empty, you don’t have to wait long – you can fully charge the battery in 35 minutes using a 66 watt cable. They are cordless with 50 watts. These are impressive numbers. For comparison: The Galaxy S21 enables fast charging with a maximum of 25 watts – wireless charging with a maximum of 15 watts.
Many highlights for less than 500 euros
The Honor V40 is already available in China. The manufacturer charges the equivalent of 456 euros for the small memory variant. The version with 256 GB costs around 506 euros. If there is an international version, experience has shown that the price will be a little higher in this country.
Are Google services making a comeback?
Honor is celebrating a premiere with the V40 5G. This is the manufacturer’s first smartphone since it split from Huawei. The hard-hit parent company sold its former subsidiary to a Chinese consortium in late 2020. The sale was necessary to ensure the awards continued. Due to the ongoing US embargo, Huawei is prohibited from doing business with US companies. You won’t find a Google service on newer devices. The honor was also affected.
It is not known to what extent the honor situation will change in the future. On the Honor V40 5G presented for the Chinese market, there are still no records of the licensing of Android and Google. In China, Google is not as relevant as it is in western countries, so this shouldn’t be a bad signal for us.
On the contrary, there are more and more reports that we will see the flagship of this country as Honor View 40 – and with Google services reports The Verge. How true the rumor is, we’ll probably find out in the near future.
