The feature will be available next year, however there is no guarantee that all ads will be filtered out
YouTube users now have the option to choose to watch alcohol and gambling-related advertisements, be it on YouTube or other third-party websites.
We had the function of adapting personalized ads, which are usually based on a user’s browser history, via the Google “ad settings” function. But these opportunities are pretty rare. The ads available online are usually “contextual”, which means they’re linked to the content we watch on YouTube or other sites that use Google Ads to sell space to advertisers.
Why is it important to restrict such ads?
The contextual ads have gotten out of hand lately. Ads for online casinos appear alongside news articles about gambling addiction.
The feature will be available in the US this year and will be implemented in the UK and the rest of the world early next year. The ads can easily be avoided with the feature and the setting is added to the ad settings. However, it is important to note that the feature does not guarantee 100% removal of gambling and alcohol ads. However, Google is confident it can remove a large portion of these ads.
This new change has been discussed with the alcohol industry. Henry Ashworth, the executive director of the industry-led International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, said that its members are determined to gain more control over online marketing related to alcohol. They also hope to make a bigger movement out of this.
Google added that users in countries where such ads were already banned won’t see any changes.
