The creator of the world’s first successful blockchain network has been a mystery since the mysterious inventor published the white paper over 12 years ago. Interestingly, Satoshi Nakamoto worked publicly on the Bitcoin project for 25 months and 13 days and was able to remain completely anonymous.
What the public knows about Satoshi Nakamoto is different than expected
Satoshi Nakamoto is a very interesting puzzle and the inventor of the technological revolution that was sparked by the birth of the Bitcoin network. We don’t know much about Satoshi other than what the Creator was telling the public while he / she or she was around. Satoshi Nakamoto managed to remain anonymous while letting go the protocol’s white paperKickstarting the network and even dealing with development staff. Satoshi remains anonymous to this day.
There are hard facts we know about Satoshi and many things we just assume. For example, it is believed that the inventor of Bitcoin turned 46 on April 5th. But of course, that date is only if it is Satoshi Nakamoto’s legitimate age.
The thing is, Satoshi managed to remain unknown all along, and to this day, people believe that the inventor either disappeared for good or may be dead. If Satoshi is alive, the creator of Bitcoin is one of the richest people still alive today, as the inventor owns an estimated 1 million BTC.
Of course, the approximate number of coins Satoshi is holding is also unknown, and we really don’t know if the Creator still has access to the keys. What we know for sure is that Satoshi was exceptional at remaining anonymous. Just recently, the editor of Bitcoin Magazine, Pete Rizzo, published a comprehensive report about the alleged last message Satoshi sent on April 26, 2011 and the last days of the Creator in public.
According to the former Bitcoin Core developer Gavin Andresen and Pete Rizzo’s report after Satoshi published his last message in December 2010 and published Bitcoin version 0.3.19, Nakamoto asked if Andresen could describe him as a “technical lead” rather than a “mysterious shadow figure”.
Rizzo’s report states that in April 2011, Satoshi wrote:
The press just spins [the mysterious shadowy figure description] into a pirate currency corner. Maybe instead do it with the open source project and give your contributors more credit. it helps motivate them.
How did Satoshi Nakamoto stay anonymous? Bitcoin’s Creator used a VPN, Tor, an anonymous domain registration, and anonymous email
One of the biggest questions people ask is: How did Satoshi Nakamoto stay anonymous? Well, Satoshi has done a large number of things to stay private such as not revealing his real name and identity and choosing to use a pseudonymous Japanese surname called “Satoshi Nakamoto”.
The inventor of Bitcoin also chose to work with people who highly respected privacy, and the creator immediately appealed to the libertarian mindset. Bitcoin was introduced at exactly the right time after the 2008 financial crisis that rocked the world.
A number of social media posts on Reddit and bitcointalk.org assume that Satoshi was using a virtual private network (VPN) and even Tor. Nakamoto had previously spoken about Tor and told the public it was a good way to disguise where a Bitcoin transaction came from.
In one archived Reddit post published seven years ago, a redditor explained like Satoshi also registered domains anonymously. The person said there may be a weakness in the way Satoshi Nakamoto registers with anonymspeech.com.
“At the time, however, there was no bitcoin, so he either had to make a transfer with Western Union, use Paypal or wire transfer, or send a check. So they can know who he is, ”said the now deleted account.
In addition to Tor and a VPN, Satoshi Nakamoto is also believed to have used a number of other ideas to hide his identity. Nakamoto also took advantage of things like a free hosting company, free webmail, and anonymous webmail.
“Something [people]including myself looked at the timestamps of its Sourceforge commits, as well as email and forum posts to guess the location. Nothing is really final, ”emphasizes the account’s comment, deleted seven years ago.
The Redditor added:
While his efforts to remain anonymous are not bulletproof, they are extreme. He clearly had reason not to be found. Reasons that go beyond making an idea more attractive by not attributing it.
Why did Satoshi remain anonymous? Was it because Bitcoin was endangering the inventor? Or maybe the possibility of death or imprisonment?
The reasons why Satoshi Nakamoto chose to remain anonymous are also believed and unknown. Most of all, people believe it is for the inventor’s own safety. Nakamoto has become extremely famous as the inventor of a technology that can bypass corporate control, government manipulation, and work above and below the current monetary system.
People have been chasing Nakamoto for a very long time and some have even claimed to be the inventor of Bitcoin on many occasions.
Although none of them have succeeded in proving they are Satoshi Nakamoto, although some have gone to incredible lengths to do so. Satoshi’s first few years of anonymity have left people very doubtful that savage individuals will do anything to prove they made the record.
How did Satoshi Nakamoto stay anonymous all these years? Well, the inventor was not only adept at designing the protocol, but also smart enough to take advantage of major operation security (opsec) while staying in the public eye.
Satoshi Nakamoto has applied and deployed many tools that have enabled his identity to remain a complete secret that has stood the test of time. One thing people assume is that after Satoshi said goodbye between December 2010 and the alleged April 2011 email, it is very likely that Nakamoto died and remains anonymous because of the death.
For example, some suggest that Satoshi could have been the late Hal Finney. Others have pointed to criminal mastermind Paul Le Roux, who is in jail and unable to communicate with the public even if he was satoshi in an anonymous manner.
Whatever the case, Satoshi deserves a lot of credit for creating Bitcoin, but also for being able to remain anonymous for more than 12 years if the inventor is still alive.
