Shaquille O’Neal is one of the best players to ever wear a Los Angeles Lakers uniform. He was one of the key forces during their 3-peat in the early 2000s and won the Finals MVP Award during all three of these championship runs. Of course, Shaquille O’Neal is clearly one of the greatest Los Angeles Lakers of all time.
Lakers’ President Jeanie Buss recently compiled a list of her 5 top Lakers of all time. Not only was the list limited to players, it was surprising that Shaquille O’Neal was removed from the list. Shaquille O’Neal responded to the list, saying he was good with their choices, but by the time he was 29 he might have asked how LeBron James was put in front of him. Jeanie Buss replied on Twitter, jokingly suggesting that if he had made more free throws, O’Neal would be on the list. She added that if the list was only made up of players, O’Neal would be in the top 5.
Jeanie Buss and Shaquille O’Neal share a personal relationship, and it’s clear that she didn’t mean to disregard anyone with her list. The Los Angeles Lakers are a famous franchise company, and there are plenty of legends to choose from as to whether or not they are important to the franchise. Jerry West and Elgin Baylor were both crossed off Jeanie Buss’ list, and it’s not like they’re not important to the Lakers. The list of all the “major Lakers” will be different, but what cannot be denied is the fact that Shaquille O’Neal has a compelling case for this conversation.
