Very sad news rocked the world of professional wrestling this weekend when AEW star Jon “Brodie Lee” Huber passed away. Before his debut at the AEW earlier this year, Huber played for the Wyatt Family as Luke Harper for several years and is well known to fans of both companies. On Saturday, Huber’s wife, Amanda, announced that the wrestler had died at the age of 41 from an apparent lung problem that was not related to Covid.
“My best friend died today,” writes Amanda on Instagram. “I never wanted to write those words down. My heart is broken. The world saw him as the amazing @brodielee (fka Luke Harper) but he was my best friend, husband, and greatest father you would ever meet. No words can express the love I feel or how broken I am right now. He has surrounded himself by lovers after an uphill battle with a non-covid lung problem. Jon Huber was born on December 16, 1979 in Rochester, New York. As a young man he competed in backyard wrestling before making his pro debut in Roc City wrestling in 2003. At first he wrestled next to his real brother under a mask with the two known as Huberboys. Soon after, he was exposed and appeared as Brodie Lee in various indie wrestling acts.
After years on the indie track, Huber finally made it to WWE in 2012 as the “first son” of the Wyatt family, a stable run by Bray “The Fiend” Wyatt. Huber is now called Luke Harper and often works with the group’s “second son”, Erick Rowan, as the dominant tag team. After breaking up with the group and taking on as a solo star, Huber won the company’s 2014 Intercontinental Championship by defeating Dolph Ziggler. He later won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship with Wyatt and Randy Orton, and again with Rowan after reuniting as a tag team.
After news of Huber’s death, Wyatt posted an emotional tribute message on Instagram. Part of the message is, “You were my best friend. My brother, my partner, my Terry Gordy. We changed the whole game because we refused to do it any other way OUR way. We were always at our best if we were. ” A team I think we both knew. We fought like brothers because we were. Huber made his debut in the wrestling organization AEW: All elite wrestling in March 2020 after leaving WWE. The wrestler reverted to his Brodie Lee ring name and came hot into the company with an undefeated streak that culminated in an AEW World Championship game against Jon Moxley. Although he was close, Huber would defeat Cody for the AEW TNT Championship. He would return the title to Cody in his last game in October, with an unknown injury that would then take him off TV.
Cody went to Twitter and addressed Huber’s death. He writes, “The loss of Brodie Lee has hit my heart.
