Filmmaker Edgar Wright was relatively quiet on the cinematic side for some time after 2017 Baby driver. But now the loner filmmaker is preparing for the release of his next feature film: Last night in Soho. Described as a psychological horror film, the film features an eclectic cast led by rising star Anya Taylor-Joy.
Total Film magazine recently released a new image from the film in which Taylor-Joy’s character is bathed in eerie red light while looking over her back at something. In addition to the still image, the magazine also contained an interview in which Edgar Wright explained the inspiration behind his latest project.
“The idea for [Last Night in Soho] is the result of 25 years of living and working in Soho. I spent so much time looking at the architecture and thought, “What did these walls see?” And walk the streets late at night. Soho has gotten a lot more gentrified, but it still has that darkness just below the surface. It’s one of those places where you only have to stand still for 60 seconds for something strange, magical, strange or dark to happen. “
The synopsis for the film, which was supplied with the picture, tells of the year 2019, in which Eloise, played by Thomasin McKenzie, a young woman from the country, comes to London to pursue her passion for fashion design. While Eloise struggled with her ambitions, an aspiring singer played Sandy in 1965 Anya Taylor-Joy, discovered that “the allegedly gold-paved streets of the big city are littered with cracks that you can swallow whole.”
Obviously, since the film is described as “psychological horror,” it is unlikely to be solely about the two girls separated by time trying to get on in the world. At some point, the characters of Eloise and Sandy will meet, where the horror part of the story will probably begin.
Fans of Wright’s previous work look forward to what the filmmaker is doing in this fresh genre. While jis previous work Shaun of the Dead was technically a horror movie, it really was a full fledged comedy while Last night in Soho seems to be an outright horror.
The presence of Anya Taylor-Joy should also increase audience interest in the film. After the outbreak of success The Queen’s GambitThe actress has become a coveted commodity in Hollywood, and her future career is being watched with great interest.
Before Taylor-Joy took on the lead roles, she made a name for herself in critically acclaimed horror films like Rober Eggers’ The witchand M. Night Shyamalan SplitsSo for the actress Wright’s film will be a kind of homecoming to the genre that set her on the path to success.
