The Avengers Campus, Disney’s upcoming expansion to the Marvel theme park, is slated to finally open later this year. The massive update had already been released last year, and the opening date for summer 2020 was announced. But health and safety concerns, as well as the national lockdown, stood in the way of those original plans. It has now been announced that Disney is finally preparing to bring the heroes of the Marvel Universe to California Adventure in 2021.
An email was recently sent to Disney’s D23 fan club members notifying them of the planned opening of the Avengers Campus. While the news wasn’t quite as specific, it has been confirmed that the expansion will open at California Adventure in 2021. Disney originally set an opening date for July 18, 2020. However, the announcement came in March just before widespread national lockdowns. Disneyland stayed closed for most of 2020, causing the company to lose millions of dollars. There is still no word on when Disneyland and / or California Adventure will be allowed to reopen. This will have a huge impact on the opening of the Avengers Campus, which is why Disney is shy of details for now.
In any case, the Marvel-themed land will be open to the public sometime this year. The expansion takes over the former A Bug’s Land, which is modeled after the Pixar film The life of a bug. Given the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the past decade, it makes perfect sense to use this space for Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the rest of the Avengers. Much like Disney did with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they are spending millions renovating the park to bring the thrills of the Marvel Universe to life.
The Avengers Campus will feature a variety of locations and attractions including Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure that will feature a lifelike, animatronic Spider-Man. Tom Holland will play the role of Peter Parker in the attraction. The expansion will also include Marvel restaurants like Pym’s Test Kitchen, as well as a sanctuary where Doctor Strange can train park visitors in the paths of the mystical arts. Characters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Dora Milaje, Ant-Man, Wasp and Thor, as well as villains like Loki and Taskmaster will appear in the park.
2021 will be a big year for Marvel. Phase 4 of the MCU will officially start next week WandaVision on Disney +, with the first episode premiering on January 15th. This is the first in a series of new live-action MCU shows to be incorporated directly into the movies. Speaking of films, Black widow, Eternal and Spider-Man 3 are all ready to arrive this year too. Black widow and Eternal were originally planned for 2020 but were delayed due to the closure of cinemas. We’ll keep you updated as more details on the Avengers Campus opening become available.
