Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film with Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, Andrea Jeremiah and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj grossed over 100 million rupees worldwide in just three days.
The master received a mixed response from the film critics. In his review of the film, Indianexpress.com’s Manoj Kumar R wrote: “Lokesh Kanagaraj had promised a Vijay film that is very different from the films Vijay usually makes. Did he keep his promise? Yes. Master is the funniest, most reasonable, entertaining, and best-looking movie that Vijay has made in a long time. “
He added, “However, Master is not a Vijay film, nor is it a Lokesh Kanagaraj film. Lokesh’s self-imposed restrictions and an obligation to be in fan service undermine the movie’s impact. He’s put in so many good talent, like just fillers and wasted resources on ideas that don’t advance the story. And these are not the characteristics of Lokesh that Maanagaram and Kaithi made. “
