Neither the 76ers nor Ben Simmons have publicly hinted at a split, but the feeling remains that his days as a Sixer are numbered.
Between the fan unrest and mounting pressure from Embiid, now is the best time for the franchise to move forward from its young point.
Apparently they’ve already tried.
According to a report by Action network, The Sixers were offering Ben Toronto for a huge package, including Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby and the fourth overall selection in the upcoming draft.
Multiple sources confirmed on Sunday that the Toronto Raptors emerged as a team with “significant” interest in Simmons. A source close to the talks said the discussions were not yet material. Multiple sources, including those close to talks, said a proposed framework, including Raptors guardians Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby and the fourth overall pick in Thursday’s draft for Simmons, has been rejected by Toronto.
Some league insiders have mentioned a more complicated framework. As a foreword, this is speculative based on statements from executives familiar with the situation. The Sixers want Bradley Beal, who is at least considering requesting a trade with the Wizards.
Obviously, the price will be high for Ben, who is a 3x all-star, 2x all-defensive player, and one of the best young players in basketball.
But charging such a high price is questionable, especially given Simmons’ fighting on the offensive.
With nothing more than Siakam, Toronto would essentially have to build from the ground up around Simmons, which wouldn’t really put them in a much better position than they are now.
Nonetheless, we can expect the Sixers to keep their standards high. We’ll see soon enough if a team is ready to meet them.
