Netflix’s take on Roald Dahl’s Matilda is slowly putting an outstanding cast together with No time to die and Captain Marvel Star Lashana Lynch now plays Miss Honey, the kind, inspiring teacher who becomes Matilda’s friend and confidante after taking the gifted boy under her wing. These Matilda The adaptation for Netflix is based on the musical stage version of Roald Dahl’s classic story, in which a young child prodigy made of bookworms fights with her parents and the hostile headmistress Miss Trunchbull.
Lashana Lynch joins her No time to die Co-star Ralph Fiennes, who has already signed up for the project as the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull, follows the trend of the original Matilda the musical Stage play that also shows the character of Trunchbull, played by a man.
The hugely popular incidental music version of the story has been running in London since 2011 and was successfully performed on Broadway between 2013 and 2017. The show’s original director, Matthew Warchus, whose previous credits include the 2014 biographical drama Proudis on board to control the customization for Netflix.
The writer of the musical stage production, Dennis Kelly, who won a Tony for the adaptation of the novel, will write the script. The musical was developed by Australian comedian Tim Minchin, who composed the music and lyrics for the production, which will undoubtedly make the leap from stage to screen along with everything else. During its run, the show has won multiple Tony Awards and received critical acclaim.
Matila was previously adapted for screen with the kind permission of director Danny DeVito, whose adaptation of Dahl’s children’s book has rightly become a cherished cinematic possession for many. Released in 1996, the film follows a precocious young girl named Matilda who discovers that she has telekinetic skills. She uses these skills to play pranks on her cruel, loveless parents and the sinister headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. The story was adapted by Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord and directed by DeVito, who also appears as Matilda’s father. The rest of the cast consists of Mara Wilson, Rhea Perlman, Paul Reubens, Pam Ferris and Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey.
Matilda is just one of many Roald Dahl adaptations coming to Netflix. The streaming giant plans to bring a variety of its stories to life, including animation Willy Wonka Series as well as new recordings The BFG, The twits, Charlie and the big glass elevator and more.
Miss Honey isn’t the only icon in Lynch’s future. The actress will be the first female 007 in the upcoming Bond adventure. No time to die. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga based on a script by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Fukunaga and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. No time to die takes on Blofeld five years after Ernst Stavro was captured, with James Bond now leaving active service. He is approached by Felix Leiter, his friend, and a CIA officer who uses his help in finding Valdo Obruchev, a missing scientist. When Obruchev is found to have been kidnapped, James Bond faces a threat the world has never seen before.
