A spaceship supply ship named after the black NASA mathematician who starred in the movie “Hidden Figures” exploded in orbit on Saturday, the 59th anniversary of John Glenn’s historic launch. Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus capsule – nicknamed SS Katherine Johnson – is expected to reach the International Space Station on Monday after being launched from the east coast of Virginia. Johnson died almost exactly a year ago at the age of 101. “Ms. Johnson was chosen because of her handwritten calculations that helped put the first Americans into space, as well as her success in breaking glass ceilings after glass ceilings as a black woman,” said Frank DeMauro, vice chairman of Northrop Grumman the night before Starts. “It is a duty of all of you to watch this movie after Cygnus launches. “”

Johnson’s numbers contributed to the February 20, 1962 flight that saw Glenn become the first American to orbit the world. Released in late 2016, the film showed the efforts of Johnson and other black women at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, during the early days of space exploration. Langley is 160 kilometers from the starting point Wallops Island.
Northrop Grumman started the four-ton expedition for NASA in the early afternoon from Wallops, where temperatures were just above zero. The Antares missile was visible from the Carolinas to Connecticut, at least where the sky was clear.

This is the second space station delivery in less than a week. A Russian capsule stopped on Wednesday with apples and oranges, among other things.
“Oh, we love fresh food !!! The Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi tweeted. He noted that the space station was flying over Virginia just 10 minutes before takeoff on Saturday.
Noguchi and his six American and Russian teammates can expect more apples once the Cygnus arrives, as well as tomatoes, walnuts, smoked salmon, parmesan and cheddar cheese, caramels, and coconut strips.
The capsule also contains 120,000 small roundworms for a muscle experiment, as well as standard computer hardware to increase the speed of data processing on the space station. Also in flight: radiation detectors for NASA’s astronaut moon landing program and a new system for further converting astronauts’ urine into drinking water.
This is the 15th Northrop Grumman Supply Race for NASA. SpaceX is NASA’s other shipper.
