According to a new report, Oppo has two new foldable phones in the pipeline, both with inward-folding designs. Vivo is also expected to launch its own folding phone that also follows the inward-folding design. The rival Xiaomi has already launched a foldable phone with the Mi MIX Fold.
Weibo tipster Digital chat station has claimed that Oppo is working on two foldable phones, one with an 8-inch display and one with a 7-inch display. Of the two, the 7-inch model is closer to mass production and is expected to hit the market first, while the larger 8-inch model may take longer to introduce. Unfortunately, not much is known about the specs and design of the two phones.
The phone won’t technically be the first branded folding device. Oppo launched a foldable prototype back in 2019. But that was a prototype. However, the device had a fold-out screen, similar to the Huawei Mate X.
However, the new devices the tipster mentions will be the brand’s first two phones with an inward-folding screen, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold or the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold.
The first of the two foldable Oppo phones could hit the market as early as this year. The same tipster in a previous Weibo post had also mentioned that Oppo could launch its first folding phone in H2 2021. However, this is just a rumor for now and must be taken with a pinch of salt.
Oppo makes a portable phone
Oppo is also rumored to be working on a new portless phone with no buttons or ports on the sides of the phone. This device is expected to have an under-display camera like we saw on the ZTE Axon 20, as well as pressure-sensitive buttons on the sides, like the buttons we saw under the Mi Mix Alpha’s display.
However, this portable phone has a USB Type-C port with a special mechanism to hide it when not in use. While no more details about this device are currently available, it will be interesting to see what kind of design innovation this phone brings to the table.
