Sony is bringing the popular Discord messaging platform to its PlayStation consoles in 2022, which has surprised many in the gaming community. The integration of the game-oriented chat app into PlayStation Network (PSN), an online game service for the PlayStation consoles, is seen as a big step by the Japanese giant.
Although the exact nature of the partnership is still unclear, the two companies are working “hard to connect Discord to your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network,” according to Sony. Sony offers voice chat capabilities on its PlayStation consoles through built-in social tools that are nowhere near Discord.
Not to mention, Discord has an active partnership with Microsoft’s Xbox. However, the integration is only limited to profiles. This means that Xbox Live Party Chat and Discord Audio Chat are not linked. Sony’s newly launched partnership with Discord seems to go much deeper, and since the integration in 2022, we can expect a significant product change that will allow some kind of communication between users on PSN and the Discord app on PC and mobile.
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on consoles and mobile phones by the beginning of next year so that friends, groups and communities can hang out while playing together, have fun and communicate more easily,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan stated in a blog post.
As part of the partnership, Sony has made a minority stake in Discord. Both companies have not disclosed the financial part of the deal. Discord was reportedly in talks with Microsoft about a possible takeover of a $ 10 billion deal earlier this year, but those talks appear to have ended as Discord recently said it wants to stay as a standalone company instead.
Discord is considered the most popular group chat platform in the gaming community. The platform, which can be accessed from smartphones and computers, allows users to speak to friends in real time via voice, text or video chat. It now has 140 million monthly active users.
Competition in the video game market has intensified recently since Microsoft completed its $ 7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda that developed hit games such as Downfall and Fail. In fact, Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, has been on a shopping spree. The aim is to offer exclusive games and better services for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
Sony is also investing heavily in first-party game developers. Earlier this year, in March, Sony acquired the Evolution Championship Series, the world’s largest fighting game tournament. In a recent interview with Nikkei AsiaJim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has indicated that the company may acquire more studios in the future to enhance the exclusive games for the PlayStation 5, the new video game console that has been hard to buy since it debuted last year .
While both Microsoft and Sony are viewed as traditional console makers, they are increasingly looking to look to services as a major growth revenue in the future. Experts say subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and Sony PlayStation Plus becomes important to attract new users to your platforms. The video game market has done well during a global pandemic, with gamers spending billions on new games.
