One day the Information and Broadcasting Ministry called Amazon Prime to respond to complaints against the web series Tandav. The makers of the show publicly apologized if this “unintentionally hurts the feelings of others”.
In the meantime, Lucknow police have filed an FIR against Tandav’s makers for allegedly portraying Hindu gods in a poor light following a complaint from Senior Sub-Inspector Amar Nath Yadav. Aparna Purohit, the original Indian head of Amazon Prime, was also named in the FIR of the Hazratganj Police Station.
The director Ali Abbas Zafar, the producer Himanshu Krishna Mehra, and others were identified according to IPC Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, place of residence, language), 295 (violation or contamination of the place of worship with) booked intent to offend the religion of a class), 505 (1) (B) (public mischief with the intention of causing fear or alarm) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of damaging its reputation) and the Information Technology Act.
Sources said a virtual meeting was held on Monday morning between ministry officials and representatives from Amazon Prime and the show, including Zafar.
Zafar and Mehra tweeted a statement Monday night.
“We have closely followed the reactions of viewers to the web series ‘Tandav’ and today, during a discussion, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed us about a large number of complaints and petitions received in various facets of the web series … “It is said said.
“The web series Tandav is a fiction, and any resemblance to actions, socialmediagossips and events is purely coincidental. The cast and crew had no intention of insulting the feelings of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious belief, or of insulting any institution, political party or person, living or dead, or to outrage. The cast and crew of ‘Tandav’ take note of the concerns expressed by the socialmediagossips and apologize unconditionally if this has inadvertently hurt the feelings of others, ”he added.
In November, the government brought content to digital platforms, including over-the-top media platforms (OTT), under the purview of the Department of I&B.
The topic of Tandav has again brought the topic of regulation of OTT content into focus. The government has asked OTT players to work out a self-regulatory code and set up an institution, but not all OTT platforms are willing to join.
The Indian Express turned to Amazon Prime. A spokesman refused to comment and an email sent to him late that evening did not trigger a response.
