Thailand seems interested in getting Japanese crypto holders’ attention through tourism. The country wants to establish a crypto-friendly tourist hotspot and the first destination country is the Nation of the Rising Sun.
The program aims to add new high-spending segments.
Per Bangkok PostThe Thailand Tourism Authority (TAT) is trying to establish the nation as the first to welcome crypto holders by targeting Japanese tourists early on.
The maneuver is given in the context of the pandemic that has hit Thai tourism hard. The program looks forward to highlighting “high spend” segments.
After talking to the Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan), TAT decided that such a target should be Japanese crypto-asset owners.
They backed up their statements by relying on the performance of crypto prices in recent years. For this reason, the bull run also encourages TAT to look into the possibility of introducing digital currencies at tourism hotspots across Thailand.
Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT, praised the cryptocurrency market and its compatibility with Thailand’s expectations of boosting tourism in a post-pandemic era:
If we can prepare the country for the cryptocurrency market, it will help create more opportunities for high-spending tourists, especially the young and wealthy generations.

Citing figures from Dalia Research, the Bangkok Post states that 11% of Japanese cryptocurrencies are above the global average of 7%. Such numbers are, in a way, encouraged by the tourism authorities to target Japan in an initial stance.
Supasorn also pointed out the possibility that Tesla CEO Elon Musk might even “be interested in visiting Thailand” after the program started.
That year the government decided to set a destination for arrival abroad for 8 million tourists, out of 10 million. Still, TAT expects to run a massive sales campaign after April to attract tourists in the third quarter of 2021.
