The Covid-19 vaccine CoronaVac, developed in China, has shown an effectiveness of at least 78% in clinical studies in the end-stage in Brazil – the Brazilian regulatory authority is starting a vaccination campaign. “This is a historic day, a day of hope,” said Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria at a press conference at which the results were announced. He said his state’s vaccination campaign will begin on Jan. 25, despite the need for approval from federal regulator Anvisa. The Butantane Institute, Sao Paulo’s premier public health center, said it would get an emergency permit by Friday.
The vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac showed an effectiveness of 78% in phase 3 tests on 13,000 volunteers in the Brazilian study.
And no one who received it developed a serious case of Covid-19, Doria added.
Turkey, which also helped run CoronaVac’s Phase 3 testing, announced last month that the vaccine had shown 91.25% effectiveness in its studies.
Sinovac has not yet published the global results of the tests, which are also being carried out in Chile and Indonesia. The company has been criticized for failing to provide comprehensive data earlier. The effectiveness rate reported for CoronaVac in Brazil is well below the 95 percent reported for vaccines from US pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna.
However, CoronaVac is easier to implement as it should not be stored at extremely low temperatures.
Brazil has the second highest death toll from the pandemic after the US with nearly 200,000 deaths.
CoronaVac was embroiled in a political battle between Doria and President Jair Bolsonaro, real opponents of the Brazilian presidential election of 2022.
Doria pushed for an agreement to test and manufacture the vaccine in Brazil. But Bolsonaro, who says he has no plans to get the vaccine himself, called it “Joao Doria’s Chinese vaccine”.
