What if, instead of using services controlled by internet giants like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, we could express ourselves on a decentralized platform that wasn’t controlled by a single company? Currently, this type of platform like Mastodon already exists. However, the general public is not currently interested in the decentralized web.
However, Twitter seems to want to change that. In 2019 he announced that he was funding a small independent team to develop a decentralized and open standard for social networks. Twitter, in turn, could become a “customer” on this platform whose name has already been found: Bluesky.
Twitter still dreams of a decentralized platform
Since that announcement in 2019, the project has been quite reluctant. The Bluesky Project recently returned to the news following the events on Capitol Hill that led to Donald Trump’s exile.
In a series of tweets posted on Jan. 14, Twitter chief Jack Dorsey wrote: “I’m not celebrating and I’m not proud of banning @realDonaldTrump from Twitter or how we got here. After a clear warning that we were taking this action, we made a decision based on the best information we had based on the physical security threats both on and off Twitter. “”
In this series of publications, Jack Dorsey also recalled the existence of the Bluesky Project. “The reason I’m so passionate about #Bitcoin is in large part because of the model it demonstrates: a fundamental internet technology that is not controlled or influenced by any single person or organization. This is how the Internet wants to be, and over time it will be more and more so. “said the head of Twitter.
“We’re trying to do our part by funding an initiative for an open decentralized standard for social media. Our goal is to be a customer of this standard for the public conversation layer on the Internet. “he then added.
Bluesky is looking for a “lead”
According to these statements from the head of Twitter, the Bluesky project decided to speak on his account. At the moment, however, there is nothing concrete that could give us an idea of how this future decentralized platform will work.
The Bluesky project team just announced the release of a review of the various technologies available, conducted by consultants. According to The Verge website, various technologies are mentioned in the document, including ActivityPub used by the Mastodon social network, the XMPP standard, or Solid, a decentralization project by Tom Berners-Lee, the inventor of the web.
To get ahead, The Bluesky Project is also looking for someone to lead it.
In other words, while Bleusky is unlikely to be launching a mainstream platform for a while, this signals that he is moving forward.
