The Batman Spin-off centered on the Gotham PD Max has found new creative blood in development for HBO. Joe Barton, the creator of Girl / Hajiwas selected as the new showrunner for the upcoming DC project. Previously, Terence Winter was from The Sopranos Celebrity, was on board to direct the show, which will take place in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ upcoming film. Now it’s up to Barton to make the accompaniment to Robert Pattinson’s debut as Dark Knight.
Joe Barton has signed up as the new showrunner for the currently unnamed series, according to multiple reports. Terence Winter was on board the series when it was first announced last July. But he left a few months ago because of creative differences. With Matt Reeves on board as lead producer, the show was mass-produced direct for HBO Max and will exist in the same universe as The Batman. It will take place before the events of the film in Batman’s first year of fighting crime in Gotham City. The film, as Reeves previously revealed, will take place in the second year of the superhero’s exploits.
It’s a big gig for Joe Barton who hasn’t tackled anything so well known in his career. Barton is best known for writing the BBC and Netflix Girl / HajiSome of his other credits are the horror film The ritual, also made for Netflix, as well Our world war and People. Barton also wrote the upcoming science fiction film invasion, in which Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer star.
The plot details for the series are largely kept under lock and key for the time being. It is said that the Gotham City show will continue to explore how it exists in this universe. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will exist outside of the established DCEU continuity. This will be part of the larger DC multiverse. It remains unclear whether actors from the film like Pattinson will perform. However, this would make sense as they occupy the same space. Jeffrey Wright who plays Jim Gordon The Batman, too, seems a logical choice. The show was led under the working title “Gotham Central”, but officially remains untitled. You can’t just go with me Gothamsince the Fox-produced show that ran 100 episodes hit them all the way.
This is part of a broader strategy at WarnerMedia and DC Films. The idea will be to have DC movies and spin-offs that can exist on HBO Max. The studio aims to expand the scope of the universe in hopes of empowering subscribers to the streaming service that launched last year. Wonder Woman 1984 made a big boost in the subscriber department so shows like this can potentially do the same. There’s still no word on when the show is set to debut. The Batman is currently expected to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. This message comes over us The Hollywood Reporter.
