The movie review of Midnight Sky: Two stars
As if we hadn’t already seen a bleak end to 2020, comes a movie where the world will be 29 years from now, humanity is endangered by contaminated air, the only healthy beings in a spaceship floating up there, and George Clooney is sick and wearing a dirty plaid shirt, his head is almost shaved, and his face is covered in a messy, gray, long beard. One of the world’s “Sexiest Man Alive” not only chose to be old, he’s so old that a younger actor who doesn’t do him justice plays him in a flashback.
Worse, the midnight sky is full of metaphors – the vast emptiness of space and that of a devastated earth, lives being wiped out and lives taking shape, a man who wouldn’t be a father and a man who finds himself thrust into the Role one. And yet the film moves almost meaninglessly between space and earth and cannot decide what it wants to be, except for an elegy of heroism.
Two of these heroes are Dr. Augustine Lofthouse (Clooney), who chose to stay in a space observatory instead of being evacuated because of likely death, and a little girl in a yellow dress whom he discovers there one day. Once upon a time, Augustine had found K-23, a Jupiter moon that could support life, and when our planet dies of an “event” the film cannot explain, his sick, terminally ill self feels responsible for every self-blaming good person Environmentalist. The girl (Spingall) refuses to speak, although she manages to give Iris her name. It’s her eyes that do all the talking – big, glowing saucers, they’re like a galaxy of their own around their glowing pupil.
The other heroes are on the spaceship Aether, which is heading for Earth after its mission to K-23 and realizes that everything Augustine predicted about it is true. This includes Captain Tom (Oyelowo), his partner Sully (Jones), and three other people who suffer a series of accidents that they survive in such surprisingly good spirits that even the film feels the need to comment on their lack of panic. The spaceship is so complex that one has the impression of being lost in another film, even if Augustine and Iris survive a blizzard, fall into an icy lake, polar cold, wolves and some dying birds, but then long periods of time are forgotten .
The midnight sky, meanwhile, advances at a slow pace, only interrupted by flashbacks that don’t honor Augustine, and by nice music that doesn’t give the film the necessary pace.
In a year that is all about survival, it is almost cruel to greet death with such equanimity.
