The new fingerprint sensor is apparently just as fast

Is the Galaxy S21 a high-end smartphone without innovation? Not at all – although many functions are more likely to be developed than actual new functions. But sometimes they have it all: For example, the supposedly new fingerprint sensor that Qualcomm has now officially introduced.

The new fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm is called “3D Sonic Sensor”, reports The Verge. This is the second generation of ultrasonic sensors. Samsung introduced the first generation with the Galaxy S10 in 2019. According to the manufacturer, the successor should be able to unlock a smartphone twice as fast. This is in line with rumors that recently passed about the Galaxy S21’s fingerprint sensor.

Larger area on the screen

The details of the fingerprint sensor should also look familiar if you’ve followed the Galaxy S21 rumors. The new sensor measures 8 x 8 mm and is therefore significantly larger than its predecessor (4 x 9 mm). As a result, it should be easier to put your finger on the correct surface of the screen. In addition, the sensor can collect more data with each scan.

Hope Qualcomm solved the first generation problems. The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor has proven to be dangerous, especially with screen protectors: when tested, almost any fingerprint could unlock a Galaxy Note 10 if such a film was attached to it. Screen – which even banking apps have responded to. The Galaxy Note 20 was apparently still affected by this problem: Samsung recently released a corresponding update.

Galaxy S21: to be released in January 2021

According to Qualcomm, the first smartphones equipped with the 3D sound sensor will be marketed from “early 2021”. While the company has not named any partners, it is very likely that Samsung is one of them. As a result, we can expect that the new fingerprint sensor will actually be integrated into the Galaxy S21.

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S21 to the public on January 14, 2021. The design of the smartphone, on the other hand, has not been a secret for some time. This will likely be just a minor upgrade over the Galaxy S20. One thing in particular should be decisive for success: the price at the exit.
