The Government of India will introduce new energy rating rules for air conditioners from July 1st. The new evaluations are carried out following the announcement of the new requirements for implementation by the BEE or the Office for Energy Efficiency revised energy consumption standards for CAs in the country.

New rules mean more Energy Efficiency Guidelines for 5-star models, and therefore AC prices should increase by at least 10%.

With the new star rating going into effect, the energy ratings of existing air conditioners will be lowered by one star. Therefore, a 5-star air conditioner purchased this summer will be equivalent to a 4-star air conditioner from next month. There is also a slight change in the ratings of windows and split air conditioners.

AC manufacturers need to change the design of their units. these changes contain new or changed parameters such as increasing airflow, surface area of copper pipes and a more efficient compressor to increase their energy efficiency.

The Office of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was originally scheduled to change energy rating standards for air conditioners in January 2022. The same was delayed as manufacturers asked BEE to postpone it for six months so they could clear inventory the last two years had been impacted due to the containment linked to the Covid.

Basically, this means that air conditioners made taking into account the new parameters and energy efficiency classes are at least 7-10% more expensive for manufacturers, costs that are passed on to consumers.

The next change in AC rating standards is expected to be announced in 2025. The new energy ratings, which come into effect on July 1, will apply until December 2024.

In an announcement earlier this month, BEE said there would be no star rating change for frost-free and direct-cooling refrigerators this year. From next year, i.e. from January 2023, the key energy figures for refrigerators will also be revised. Therefore, higher rated refrigerators will also increase in price.
