With the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, the focus is on the camera setup on the back. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 108MP main sensor on the back, which Samsung says is an improved version compared to last year. The camera of the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a total of four rear cameras, including the ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera and two telephoto lenses with 10 megapixels each. While one telephoto lens supports 3x optical zoom, the other supports 10x optical zoom.
How does this dual telephoto lens system on the S21 Ultra work?
With the S20 series, Samsung introduced what is known as the “Space Zoom” feature that allowed users to zoom in almost 100 times, although the results were not always the best. The S21 improves on this feature and adds a new system for extended zoom.
As already mentioned, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has two telephoto cameras. When a user decides to enlarge a subject up to 9x, the camera relies on the 3x optical zoom lens. If the zoom exceeds 10x, the other telephoto lens is used. Samsung stated during its presentation that a user who zooms in on a subject more than 10 times represents a mixture of optical and digital subjects.
Whenever a user clicks on a photo using Ultra, the camera’s AI system decides which lens to use, even as you zoom in and out on the photo, which is certainly unique. This is also the first Samsung phone to feature a dual telephoto lens system.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra camera
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has an updated 108MP Pro sensor that allows users to take 12-bit HDR photos. The company claims the photos will have a much wider dynamic range than previous generation devices.
Additionally, with Samsung, users can now record video at 4K at the highest 60 frames per second across all lenses, including the front and all four lenses on the back. This allows users to switch to a different perspective without any loss of quality. The company also claims improved night performance thanks to the Bright Night Sensor, which offers better night mode, noise reduction and 12MP non-binning technology.
With the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung makes many demands with the camera and the dual telephoto lens system is definitely unique. We have to wait and check the device to see how it actually translates into practice.
