At first glance, the newly released premiere episodes of WandaVision seem to have nothing of the essence and just seem to advance the “House of M” theory that was floating around – that Wanda, plagued with grief after Vision’s death, lost control of her sanity and powers, and eventually created the fake reality sitcom style that we see them in. But look carefully and you will see the little clues scattered around this picture that make a very different and slightly darker picture.
WandaVision Starts with a newly wed Wanda and Vision who drive to the quaint town of Westview and settle in their new home. When they are alone they use their powers on everyday tasks, but when they are with other socialmediagossips they pretend to be like everyone else. But aside from knowing that they love each other and that they have powers that they can’t reveal in front of ordinary socialmediagossips, the duo seem to have no memory of what happened before the series – that Vision is dead and Wanda is now living one Post-snap world.
Wanda conjures things up out of nowhere and puts her and Vision wedding rings on her fingers when socialmediagossips ask her – it makes it seem like Scarlet Witch is the one who rules this makeshift reality. But it’s the smaller clues and obvious Easter eggs that differ.
The “commercials” in the two episodes.
Following the series’ sitcom theme, both recently released episodes of WandaVision Have a commercial about fictional products at halftime and seem subtle allusions to Wanda Maximoff’s childhood and how she came to her strength. As in the first episode, after Wanda and Vision move into their new home, we see a commercial about a toaster with a menacing power-up sound followed by a continuous ticking of the name Toast Mate 2000 from Stark Industries.
If you think of it as an Easter egg, it could be an indication that Stark Industries is why Wanda ended up at Hydra. in the Avangers: Age of UltronWanda and her brother Pietro harbored a particular hatred of Tony Stark, as it was one of his companies that made bombs that killed their parents, and the siblings waited for death just inches from a second away for the slightest change in pressure.
Similarly, there is another commercial in the second episode, this time about a Swiss luxury watch called “Strücker” with an unmistakable symbol and name on the dial – the name Hydra and its Octopus Skull logo, followed by another, loudly ticking Clock tone. For those who may have forgotten, Baron von Strücker was the Hydra leader who recruited Wanda and Pietro for his experiments with Loki’s scepter (hiding the spirit stone).
But nothing in the MCU is ever as innocent as it seems, and along with the other clues in the two episodes, these two commercials seem to suggest something entirely different.
HYDRA, not Wanda, controls the artificial reality.
If you looked closely at the two episodes you would know that one of the signs of the outside world trying to invade this illusion lives in the Wanda when her black and white surroundings are disturbed by completely random things disturbed out of the blue becomes. Splash of color. Like the red helicopter (with the SWORD sign, but more on that later) in her rose bushes, the cut on Dottie’s hand was bleeding bright red, followed by the voice on the radio urgently asking who was doing this to Wanda, etc.
So let’s start with the first commercial about the Toast Mate 2000 from Stark Industries. Towards the end the toaster starts ticking loudly, the light on it starts to flash and starts to flash red. In fact, this is the first color we see in monochrome WandaVision and the lady, who seems a little disturbed (either by the noise or maybe the crack in the construct with the flashing red light) pulls out the toast, followed by the presenter advising viewers to “forget the past, that is.” Your future”. A fairly innocent sales line that sounds quite loaded given the strange amnesia life Wanda and Vision live in.
While it doesn’t specifically state that HYDRA is the culprit here, it does state that someone from the outside, likely SWORD (SENTIENT WEAPON WATCH AND RESPONSE), is trying to break through this made-up reality.
In any case, it is the second commercial for the “Strücker” watch that establishes the HYDRA connection, especially when it is announced that “He will have time for you” – while Strücker was killed, this does not necessarily mean that he is so disappeared HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola, maybe his computerized consciousness remains or he was revived, just like it happened in the comics. Or maybe it’s an indication that while Striicker is dead, the rest of the malicious organization isn’t done with Wanda, which brings us to the other clues in the plot.
It’s HYDRA who wants Wanda to have children.
At the end of Episode 2 we see Wanda having a baby bump out of nowhere. Now it could be that Wanda simply walked over Vision’s death cuckoo and magically got pregnant like she did in the comics. But Marvel never really sticks to the comic book story, stating how everyone grills Wanda for not having kids WandaVisionIt’s almost like someone is making her magically conjure up her pregnancy.
Whether it’s Vision’s boss’s wife asking Wanda why she hasn’t had kids, others who suggest she should try, or the repetitive and very creepy robotic singing of the crowd in Episode 2 that the Talent Show is for “is” the children “(without a single child ever seen in the episode) someone is trying to plant the idea in Wanda’s head that her reality and happiness are incomplete without children. Perhaps that is someone HYDRA who is still looking for young super soldiers to turn against the avengers and realize his long-cherished dream of world domination.
Wanda seems to have had some influence on this false reality, especially at the end of the second episode, where when she sees the beekeeper with the sigh of the SWORD, she says an insistent “NO!” and time turns so the couple never gets outside. Chances are Wanda conjured Vision in her grief over the loss, but HYDRA, already aware of her powers, saw her opportunity and established the rest of the construct to keep her locked up so that she could use them for her gain to be able to use.
We agree this is a lot of Maybes and the reason for what happened can be a lot simpler. But it’s the MCU – nothing is ever what it seems, and besides, it will be a long time WandaVision begins to spill the beans (especially because of the prohibited ticking sound in the commercials). Until then, wild theories are the answer. The premiere episodes of WandaVision continue streaming now the official Disney + app.
