We’re not used to seeing it Sailing freighterExcept for a few projects, freighters generally use incineration. Michelin does not want to change this with tires, but with gigantic inflatable sails that are placed on huge freighters.
The project is called Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) and is being developed by Michelin R&D in collaboration with two Swiss inventors. It is not a system designed to replace motors Cargo ships but to complete them. To complement them with a clean and free source of energy like wind power.
The candle (or candles, whichever is placed) Can be opened and collapsed automatically thanks to the air compressor and a telescopic mast. The creators of the project emphasize that this is an automated process as cargo sailors do not necessarily have experience in sailing with sailboats.
The sail or set of sails is intended to reduce the fuel consumption of the boat. Against the wind, the boat can move forward and gain momentum more easily. Its creators say it helps Reduction of the total fuel consumption of ships between 10 and 20%.
The design of the sailing system enables easy use on cargo ships. Due to its design, it does not require new boats to place it, but rather can be attached to existing boats. It can also be easily integrated into new boat designs on request.
The future of the freighters
For the time being, Michelin has built a prototype wing of 100 square meters. You will shortly be testing it “in the real world” with a sailboat and on a commercial freighter in 2022. The idea is that mass production will start from there and be commercially available.
Anyway, that It’s not the only future waiting for freighters. With a view to the coming years and with the aim of making them more ecological, electrical alternatives are being developed. Also crazier ideas of using huge airships. Others, like the US Air Force, don’t focus that much on the environment.
