Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, made Time Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People of 2021. The programmer was listed as an innovator and Time appreciated his ability to empower other creators with his continued support for Ethereum and all the things that its main feature, smart contracts, can help them achieve.
Vitalik Buterin in the top 100 influencers of the time
The most famous co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, became included in the Times 2021 list of 100 Most Influential People. The magazine ranks the top people by current events and specifies the unique roles of the people on the list. Others included for 2021 include Nayib Bukele, President of El Salvador, who pioneered the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender, and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who is also a cryptocurrency enthusiast.
Discussing Buterin’s inclusion this year, Alexios Ohanian, one of the original builders of Reddit, said:
What makes Vitalik so special, however, is that he is a builder. No one could possibly have found all of the uses for Ethereum, but it took someone’s idea to get started. From then on, a new world has opened up and new ways of using blockchain technology have emerged – some of which I have invested in.
Ethereum is a platform for platforms
That year, Ethereum was the breeding ground for the rise of NFTs, a technology that is changing the way artists and creators monetize their work. Opensea, one of the most important NFT markets, has already exceeded the billion dollar mark in sales. Another major Ethereum-based project that has come up this year is Axie Infinity. Axie was founded in 2017 but is now in the spotlight due to the formidable income some make from gaming. Axie is making a big impact in emerging markets like the Philippines and Venezuela.
Ohanian, who wrote the review for Buterin, also points out some important projects in the Ethereum ecosystem. He emphasized:
Whether startups like Sorare are reinventing Fantasy Sports or Rainbow users are showcasing their NFT collections, none of this would have existed without Vitalik’s creation. I’ve never been so excited about the potential of the internet, and that’s mainly thanks to Vitalik Buterin.
Ethereum is now hovering above the $ 3,500 mark, up 4.3% over the past 24 hours.
