Luka Doncic has caused a sensation in the NBA in recent years. Although Luka has only been in the league for three years, he has done so much during that time. Doncic was one of the best players in Europe before joining the NBA. And despite the initial doubts and skepticism about his potential to be successful in the NBA, Doncic has established himself as an elite star.
In retrospect, it seems incredible that Doncic wasn’t the first overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft. But that’s exactly what happened when the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings surrendered Doncic to pick DeAndre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III before him.
In fact, it was another European sensation that let Doncic go. Vlade Divac, the former all-star of the Sacramento Kings, served as general manager in the franchise’s front office. Divac used the Kings second overall pick to pick Bagley and let Doncic go.
For Divac, his decision was later criticized. But Divac later admitted that Doncic was the most complete player in the draft class, and the Mavericks found the perfect player for their team. Even so, he claimed the Kings made the right decision to choose Bagley over Doncic.
“Luka is a great talent, he was more willing than any other child in his [draft] Class and it is [a] fits in perfectly with Dallas. “
Divac has made numerous indications since the 2018 NBA draft that it was his decision to pick Marvin Bagley III over Luka Doncic and that he has no regrets given that Bagley has the potential to become a superstar in the league. And while Bagley is young in his career and has time to grow into the superstar that Divac and the Kings have come to expect. But the future of the Kings could be very different if they had Luka Doncic on their team.
