Hollywood was in a state of upheaval when WarnerMedia recently announced that it would broadcast all upcoming films on HBO Max at the same time they hit theaters. One of these films is accidental Godzilla versus Kongwhich was mainly funded by Legendary Pictures. A report from Deadline said Legendary can only forward the film to HBO Max if Warner spits out more than $ 250 million. This was the price that Netflix had previously offered for the film.

“”Godzilla versus Kong an HBO Max hybrid could stay in its May 21 slot, but only if Warner Bros makes a deal with Legendary that uses the $ 250 million value that was set when the movie was earlier on Netflix as a base was bought. “

Of course, Warner has to think long and hard about such a huge price. When the studio announced that all upcoming films would debut simultaneously with theaters on HBO Max, it was clear that the decision would result in massive losses in box office revenues and the only gain in terms of new subscribers would be to HBO Max .

It would be even more of a loss for Warner to pay an additional $ 250 million to Legendary, especially for a film that is fourth in a franchise that hasn’t been particularly well received. The previous movie in the series, Godzilla: King of the MonstersIt was a box office disappointment, grossing $ 386 million worldwide on a budget between $ 170 million and $ 200 million.

While the previous films haven’t been as successful as hoped, there’s still a lot of excitement for Godzilla versus Kong, based on the strength of the popularity of the two title monsters alone. Godzilla and King Kong fought in live action before in the 1962 film King Kong versus Godzilla.

But they were just two guys in rubber costumes fighting in a miniature cardboard city. The upcoming Godzilla versus Kong promises special effects and state-of-the-art CGI that can finally do justice to the true scope of a brawl between the giant monkey and the giant lizard. Now that Godzilla has been named leader of the Kaijus King of the monstersHe comes to Skull Island to face Kong himself, who has no intention of bending his knee in front of the giant lizard without a fight.

If ever a movie was designed to be seen on the big screen, it had to be Godzilla versus Kong. But the film has already been delayed so many times that fans will only be grateful to finally see it, even if it’s streamed on HBO Max, something fans don’t seem happy with. It remains to be seen whether Legendary and Warner will be able to put their differences aside and find a solution to streaming rights.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla versus Kong Stars like Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film will hit theaters and on HBO Max on May 21, 2021.
