If monster movies like King Kong and Godzilla were done first, there was no CGI to render the monsters on screen. Instead, puppets, stop motion, and actors in monster costumes were used to bring the giants to life. This did not allow for much detail regarding the monsters’ facial expressions. The VFX supervisor from Godzilla versus KongBryan Hirota recently stated in an interview that the new CGI version of Kong we see in the film had a specially prepared eye model to give the animal a wider range of emotions.
“We also developed a very lifelike, high-quality eye model for Kong. That’s the thing you look at to say what someone is thinking. The eyes are a lot of heavy weight for any type of creature.”
While Godzilla versus Kong is depicted as a collision between two huge, equally dangerous monsters. The movie’s trailers clearly portrayed King Kong as a hero who is tricked into preventing a raging Godzilla from destroying cities. In a previous interview, the film’s director, Adam Wingard, had stated that Kong was meant to be the emotional uplift in the story rather than human characters, and an important way to do that was by engaging the mighty monkeys use eyes.
“Kong, for example, almost like a human channel, as we can actually cut it to Kong in this film without having to resort to the human characters for relatively large parts of the film, because we can experience things through him. He is emotional and all of these things like his eyes and the way he experiences things are understandable, so we can just treat him like any other character, and socialmediagossips will always support that. “
The changes related to Kong worked, and fans praised the emotional elements that the mighty monkey brought to the film rather than being another superpredator for Godzilla. Aside from his relationship with socialmediagossips, which drives much of the narrative, GvK also allowed Kong to reflect on his past.
After finding Godzilla Kong travels too much for his first fight and travels into the “Hollow Earth” system of giant underground tunnels. There he finds an old battle ax that his ancestors used to fight former members of Godzilla’s species. In those scenes where he comes into contact with his legacy, Kong’s new eye design is of great use in conveying the giant monkey’s emotions to the audience. We therefore feel part of the journey with him as Kong prepares to take final action against Godzilla.
