Wonder Woman 1984 is finally coming to theaters. And while the reviews have been mixed so far, fans are excited to see what filmmaker Patty Jenkins does in the new film starring Princess Diana aka Wonder Woman. Considering the popularity of Jenkins’ original DCEU movie, 2017 Wonder womanA fan recently asked her if the filmmaker would like to make films about other superheroes, to which Jenkins replied with the names of two MCU heroes and one DCEU hero.
“Thanks for the question. Probably Superman, Spiderman or Black Widow! So much potential in everyone, always.”
Interestingly, only Thor, who was the first superhero Jenkins was associated with, is missing from the list. In front Wonder womanThe filmmaker was at the forefront in talks with Marvel Thor 2: The dark world. That deal collapsed after Jenkins couldn’t see on par with the studio which direction the film should go, causing their ship to jump to the DCEU Wonder woman.
It is interesting to consider what Patty Jenkins could do with either Superman or Spider-Man. Both heroes represent the hopeful, optimistic end of the superhero spectrum as opposed to the nervous antiheroes. Jenkins has already demonstrated her ability to help create a hopeful superhero movie Wonder woman and its sequel, and she could undoubtedly do the same for the other two heroes.
Black Widow is the most unusual choice, at least on the surface. After all, Black Widow’s backstory is less hopeful and inspiring and more terrifying and scarring. Robbed of her childhood, raised as an assassin, full of guilt about her previous murders, Black Widow is constantly viewed with suspicion by Jenkins and her fellow Avengers. It seems like an odd choice for Jenkins to make a movie about.
But the choice makes a lot more sense if you return to Jenkins’ past before she became known as the DCEU director. In 2003, Jenkins directed the film monster with Charlize Theron as a former prostitute who murders many of her male victims and is eventually caught. The film received a number of nominations, with Theron winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.
A Black widow Jenkins film modeled on monster could be a very interesting project, although it is unlikely to be illuminated green by Disney. As it is, Black Widow is finally getting its own standalone movie in the MCU, which should be released on the side this year Wonder Woman 1984before social distancing forced theaters to close.
