In September 2018, Elon Musk announced that Yusaku Maezawa would be the first part of the DearMoon project. It is a manned space flight aboard SpaceX’s spacecraft rocket that will fly over the moon. Elon Musk also said that this Japanese billionaire would be accompanied by 6 to 8 other artists to create something that they will showcase when they return to earth.
However, a lot has happened since that announcement. In 2020, Yusaku Maezawa caused controversy in particular when he announced that he was looking for a woman with very specific criteria to accompany him on this expedition. The latter also wanted to organize some kind of reality TV in space to follow the adventures of the billionaire and his companion in space. In the meantime, Yusaku Maezawa has changed his mind in view of many points of criticism and is canceling this project.
Yusaku Maezawa chats with Elon Musk on his YouTube channel
On the SpaceX side, this space flight is still planned for 2023. Although we haven’t had any news from Yusaku Maezawa for a few months, he has just released a new video on his YouTube channel.
The latter invited Elon Musk to discuss the DearMoon project, and at the same time announces that he is inviting 8 people from all over the world to this adventure. In total, the Starship rocket will therefore carry 10 to 12 people as part of this project. This mission will be short-lived as the trip should take a total of 6 days. SpaceX estimates that it will take Starship 3 days to reach the moon and 3 days to return.
On the DearMoon project official website, you can find the schedule, which states that pre-registrations are already open until March 14, 2021. Shortlisted candidates will then have to pass interviews and provide a medical record to prove their eligibility to participate in such an excursion. All of these steps should come to an end and determine the 8 people selected by the end of May 2021.
