Filmmaker Zack Snyder said he decided to shoot his zombie heist film Army of the Dead with Netflix because Warner Bros showed a lack of interest in the project.
The filmmaker, known for films like 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, is returning to the zombie genre with the new film.
He made his directorial debut in 2004 with the zombie horror Dawn of the Dead.
Headed by Dave Bautista, Army of the Dead takes place after a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, when a group of mercenaries play the ultimate game of chance and venture into the quarantine zone to commit the largest heist ever attempted.
Zack Snyder shares a story with Warner Bros that dates back to his 2006 blockbuster 300. With the Army of the Dead, however, the studio wasn’t as enthusiastic.
“They didn’t want to spend that much money on a zombie movie, or they just didn’t take it that seriously. I always thought, folks, this is more than (just a zombie movie) but it fizzled out, ”Snyder told Entertainment Weekly.
The filmmaker said when he presented the idea to Netflix, the streaming giant immediately agreed to endorse it.
“We were in a meeting on Netflix and I was talking about some of these scripts that I was working on. And I mentioned the idea to (Netflix director of the original films Scott Stuber) and he said, “This is the movie! Write the film and let’s do it. ‘
“I said, ‘What do you mean now? ‘And he says, “Write it tomorrow and we’ll shoot it in a week,” said Snyder.
While Army of the Dead has not yet been released on Netflix, the streaming giant has already lit a prequel movie as well as an anime television series in green to expand the franchise.
Commenting on the anime series, Zack Snyder said, “I took a very deep dive into why the zombie plague and where it starts.”
Suffice it to say it’s from Area 51, which is in the opening scene of the film, and then the entire cast is in the animated series, along with Christian Slater as the villain. We’re really doing a super deep dive on where this zombie plague came from, ”he added.
Ella Purnell, Huma Qureshi, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raul Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro and Matthias Schweighofer will also be featured in the Army of the Dead.
The film should be released later this year.
